Carrie-Anne Moss

Carrie-Anne Moss has built a screen career around composure, intensity and the sense that her characters are always thinking one move ahead. Born on August 21, 1967, in Burnaby, British Columbia, she joined Vancouver children’s musical theatre at 11 and later toured Europe with the Magee Secondary School Choir. Her first television appearance came while she was living in Spain, playing Tara in the drama series Dark Justice. She moved from Barcelona to Los Angeles with the production in 1992, later studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Pasadena and joined the cast of Models Inc. Further television work followed throughout the 1990s, including appearances in Street Justice, Baywatch, F/X: The Series and Due South. Everything changed with Trinity in The Matrix. The 1999 science-fiction thriller demanded considerable physical commitment, including a three-hour physical test during casting, and brought Moss international recognition. Trinity suited her particular combination of control and force: she could make stillness feel as important as action. Moss returned for The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions in 2003, provided voice work for related animated and video-game projects, and eventually reprised the role in The Matrix Resurrections in 2021. She quickly showed that the breakthrough would not define the limits of her work. In Christopher Nolan’s Memento, Moss played Natalie, a manipulative bartender drawn into the fractured world of a man with anterograde amnesia. The performance earned her the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female. Her other film roles have ranged from the restrained period drama of Chocolat and the Mars mission thriller Red Planet to the zombie comedy Fido, the domestic suspense of Disturbia and the historical disaster film Pompeii. Television has offered another strong lane. Moss played attorney Jeri Hogarth in Jessica Jones and reprised the character in Daredevil, Iron Fist and The Defenders. She also appeared in Chuck, Vegas and Humans. Across science fiction, noir, drama and comic-book television, Moss brings a grounded severity that can read as protective, dangerous or both—often within the same scene.
