THE SETUP

The choice has been made. The prophecy has been questioned. And now the war has arrived. Released just months after The Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions brings the original Matrix trilogy to its enormous conclusion, moving between the desperate defence of Zion, Neo's final journey through the machine world and an Agent Smith who has grown beyond anything the Matrix can control. Neo begins the film trapped somewhere between worlds. Zion is running out of time. Trinity refuses to abandon him. And while humanity prepares for its last stand, Smith continues multiplying. What began in 1999 with a hacker following a white rabbit has become a battle for the survival of two worlds.

LIMBO

Neo Is Somewhere He Shouldn't Be

After the events of Reloaded, Neo wakes up in a strange subway station.

He isn't inside the Matrix.

He isn't fully in the real world either.

The station exists between the two, controlled by a mysterious programme known as the Trainman.

For perhaps the first time since becoming the One, Neo finds himself somewhere his abilities mean very little.

He can't simply open a door.

No code he can bend.

And no train he can board without permission.

While Neo attempts to understand where he is, Trinity and Morpheus search for a way to bring him home.

THE ORACLE

Everything That Has a Beginning Has an End

The Oracle has always understood more than she reveals.

When Neo finally meets her again, she doesn't give him an easy solution.

She gives him a direction.

Smith is his opposite.

The equation is trying to balance itself.

And somewhere ahead lies a choice neither Neo nor the machines can avoid forever.

Neo now understands that winning isn't simply about destroying an enemy.

It may require him to understand why that enemy exists at all.

AGENT SMITH

The Virus Has Taken Over

Smith is no longer merely an Agent.

He's something much worse.

Freed from the system that once controlled him, Smith can overwrite almost anyone inside the Matrix, turning them into another version of himself.

One Smith becomes hundreds.

Hundreds become thousands.

His hunger isn't limited to Neo anymore.

Smith wants everything.

Humans.

Programs.

The Matrix itself.

The machines created Agent Smith to maintain control.

Now even they can no longer control what he has become.

ZION

The Machines Have Arrived

While Neo searches for a way to end the war, Zion faces the battle it has feared for generations.

The machines break through.

Sentinels pour into the city.

Humanity's last refuge becomes a battlefield.

There is no simulation here.

No convenient exit.

No telephone waiting to return anybody to safety.

The people defending Zion are fighting in the real world, against an enemy that massively outnumbers them.

For Commander Lock and the defenders of the dock, survival comes down to ammunition, machinery and time.

Mostly time.

And they're running out of it.

CAPTAIN MIFUNE

Zion Makes Its Last Stand

Captain Mifune and the Armoured Personnel Unit corps become the front line of Zion's defence.

The machines descend in overwhelming numbers as the APUs fire continuously into the swarm.

It's one of the trilogy's largest action sequences, but underneath the spectacle is something much simpler.

Ordinary people are trying to stay alive.

Neo may be the One.

Morpheus may believe in prophecy.

But down in Zion, survival depends on people standing their ground when retreat is no longer possible.

NIOBE

One Ship Can Still Change Everything

Niobe has never needed prophecy to tell her what to do.

She trusts her judgment.

And when Zion desperately needs help, she pilots the Logos through a route that almost nobody believes can be survived.

The ship races through mechanical tunnels while Sentinels close in around it.

Getting home becomes an act of precision, instinct and complete commitment.

Sometimes saving humanity doesn't require being the One.

Sometimes it requires somebody exceptionally good at flying a ship.

NEO & TRINITY

One Last Journey Together

Neo knows where he has to go.

Machine City.

The place no human being willingly travels.

Trinity goes with him.

Their relationship has been at the emotional centre of the trilogy from the beginning, and Revolutions strips away everything around them until the journey becomes simply about two people trusting each other.

They fly toward a place designed to destroy them.

Sentinels attack.

The Logos is damaged.

And for a brief moment, their ship breaks through the permanent darkness covering the world.

Trinity sees the sky.

Real sunlight.

Something humanity has almost forgotten exists.

Then gravity takes hold again.

TRINITY

Neo Has to Continue Alone

The journey to Machine City comes at an enormous cost.

The crash leaves Trinity mortally wounded.

Neo desperately tries to save her, but this time there is no miracle waiting inside the Matrix.

No code to rewrite.

No impossible choice that can undo what has happened.

Trinity has already died once for Neo.

This time, she asks him to continue.

Their goodbye gives the final film its most human moment.

The fate of civilisation is waiting outside.

But for Neo, the world briefly becomes just one person.

Then he has to let her go.

MACHINE CITY

Neo Walks Into the Enemy's Home

Blind and alone, Neo reaches Machine City.

Instead of attacking, he does something nobody expects.

He negotiates.

Smith has become a threat to both humanity and the machines.

If he consumes the Matrix completely, there may eventually be nothing left for either side to control.

Neo offers the machines a deal.

He will stop Smith.

In return, the war must end.

For a conflict built around humans fighting machines, the final solution begins with cooperation.

THE FINAL FIGHT

Neo vs Smith

Rain pours across the Matrix.

The streets are empty.

Every person watching is Smith.

And in the middle of it all stand the two remaining pieces of the equation.

Neo and Smith.

Their final confrontation abandons the relatively grounded martial arts of the first movie for something closer to a battle between gods.

They crash through buildings.

They fight through the sky.

They hit the ground hard enough to create craters.

But physical strength doesn't ultimately decide the fight.

Neo begins to understand something Smith cannot.

Losing and choosing to stop fighting are different.

THE CHOICE

Neo Lets Smith Win

Smith believes victory has finally arrived.

Neo stops resisting.

Smith absorbs him.

For a moment, there is another Smith.

Then everything changes.

By allowing himself to be overwritten while connected directly to the machines, Neo gives them a path into Smith.

Light tears through the system.

One Smith disappears.

Then another.

Then all of them.

The virus is removed.

Smith wanted Neo to surrender.

He never understood that surrender could itself be a choice.

PEACE

The War Stops

The Sentinels attacking Zion suddenly stop.

Then they leave.

After generations of war, humanity experiences something almost unimaginable.

Silence.

Morpheus has spent his life believing that the One would end the war.

When it finally happens, even he seems overwhelmed by the reality of it.

Neo hasn't destroyed the machines.

Humanity hasn't conquered them.

Instead, they've reached an agreement.

It's not perfect.

It may not last forever.

But for the first time, there is peace.

THE MATRIX

A New Sunrise

Inside the restored Matrix, the world begins again.

The rain is gone.

The darkness has lifted.

The Oracle sits with Sati as a spectacular sunrise fills the sky.

The Architect arrives and confirms that humans who genuinely wish to leave the Matrix will be allowed to do so.

Then comes the inevitable question.

Will the peace last?

The Oracle doesn't pretend to know forever.

But she believes it will last as long as it can.

And when Sati asks whether Neo will ever return, the Oracle offers something more hopeful.

She suspects they may see him again.

LEGACY

The End of the Original Matrix Trilogy

The Matrix Revolutions completed an extraordinary trilogy in less than five years.

The original Matrix asked whether reality itself could be trusted.

Reloaded questioned prophecy, choice and the systems controlling both humans and machines.

Revolutions turns those ideas toward their conclusion.

Neo doesn't win because he's stronger than everybody else.

He wins because he finally understands the choice only he can make.

The machines survive.

Humanity survives.

The Matrix survives.

And Agent Smith doesn't.

For a trilogy obsessed with control, the final victory comes from letting go.

The white rabbit has reached the end of the road.

At least for now.
