DEVELOPING STORY
THE STORY
The Owens women are back together. Twenty-eight years after Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman played witchy sisters Sally and Gillian Owens in Practical Magic, the pair have reunited for the long-awaited sequel. Bullock and Kidman appeared together at the London premiere of Practical Magic 2, ahead of the movie's arrival in cinemas next month. And for anyone who grew up loving the 1998 original, this isn't just a reunion between Sally and Gillian. Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest are back too.
THE OWENS WOMEN ARE BACK
Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman Return as Sally and Gillian
Practical Magic 2 brings Bullock and Kidman back to the roles of Sally and Gillian Owens nearly three decades after we last saw the sisters together.

The original Practical Magic was released in 1998, mixing romance, comedy and supernatural fantasy with a story built around the relationship between two very different sisters.
It wasn't an enormous critical hit when it arrived.
But audiences never really let it disappear.
Over the following decades, Practical Magic developed a devoted following through home video, television and streaming, eventually becoming one of the most fondly remembered supernatural movies of the late '90s.
That lasting affection is a big reason seeing Bullock and Kidman standing together again feels like such a moment.
A PROPER FAMILY REUNION
Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest Are Back Too
Sally and Gillian aren't the only Owens women returning.
Stockard Channing reprises her role as Aunt Franny, while Dianne Wiest is once again playing Aunt Jet.
For fans of the original, that's important.
Franny and Jet raised Sally and Gillian in the Owens family home and were responsible for some of the movie's funniest, strangest and most memorable moments.
Having Bullock, Kidman, Channing and Wiest together again gives Practical Magic 2 something many legacy sequels struggle to achieve — a genuine reunion of the people who made the original special.
A NEW GENERATION
Practical Magic 2 Passes the Story to the Next Owens Women
The sequel isn't only looking backwards.
Practical Magic 2 introduces another generation of the Owens family, with Joey King and Maisie Williams playing Sally's daughters, Kylie and Antonia.

The story takes place roughly 25 years after the original and follows several generations of Owens women as they confront the curse that has haunted their family for centuries.
The movie draws inspiration from Alice Hoffman's 2021 novel The Book of Magic, the fourth book in her Practical Magic series.
Lee Pace, Xolo Maridueña and Solly McLeod also join the cast.
SANDRA BULLOCK IS BACK
Practical Magic 2 Marks Bullock's Return After Four Years Away
Practical Magic 2 is significant for another reason.
It's Sandra Bullock's return to acting.

Bullock stepped away from the screen following The Lost City and Bullet Train in 2022, meaning audiences haven't seen her in a new movie for four years.
And she hasn't simply returned to play Sally.
Bullock and Kidman are both producers on Practical Magic 2, giving the two stars a role in shaping where the Owens family goes next.
Susanne Bier, whose previous work includes Bird Box and The Night Manager, directs the sequel.
28 YEARS OF PRACTICAL MAGIC
A Movie That Found Its Audience After Leaving Cinemas
There's something particularly fitting about Practical Magic returning now.
The original wasn't treated as a classic in 1998.
It became one.
Over the years, audiences kept discovering Sally, Gillian, Franny and Jet — whether on VHS, DVD, television or streaming.
The midnight margaritas, the Owens house, the soundtrack and the relationship between the sisters became part of the movie's identity long after its original theatrical run ended.
Twenty-eight years later, the people who kept watching it are finally getting another chapter.
And this time, the Owens women are walking into cinemas with an audience already waiting.
Practical Magic 2 begins its international theatrical rollout on September 9, 2026, ahead of its US release on September 11.
