DEVELOPING STORY

THE STORY

Samuel Monroe Jr., the actor known for his roles in a string of memorable 1990s films including Menace II Society, Tales from the Hood, Set It Off and The Players Club, has died. He was 52. Monroe died on Wednesday, August 26, at Providence Saint Joseph in Burbank following a lengthy battle with meningitis, according to his wife, Shawna Stewart. His death brings to an end a career closely connected with some of the most distinctive Black films of the 1990s.

Samuel Monroe Jr.’s Battle With Meningitis

Monroe had been seriously ill for more than a year after contracting meningitis while filming in Las Vegas.

Earlier this year, his family revealed that he had been placed on life support. Stewart said her husband had sought treatment at several hospitals before the infection was correctly diagnosed.

According to the family, by the time Monroe received the diagnosis, the meningitis had spread to his brain and spine.

His condition became increasingly serious, with Stewart previously revealing that Monroe had suffered seizures and lost the ability to move his body.

He had reportedly been on life support since April.

Following his death, Stewart paid tribute to her husband and the strength he had shown throughout his illness, writing that his journey had ended but his light would continue to shine.

Monroe’s mother, Joyce Patton, also confirmed her son’s death and thanked those who had supported and prayed for the family during his illness.

Menace II Society

His Breakthrough in Menace II Society

For movie fans, Samuel Monroe Jr. will perhaps be remembered most readily for his appearance in the Hughes brothers’ Menace II Society.

Released in 1993, the uncompromising crime drama followed Caine Lawson as he tried to navigate life in Watts, Los Angeles, and became one of the decade's defining films.

Monroe appeared as Ilena’s cousin in the film, which featured a cast including Tyrin Turner, Larenz Tate, Jada Pinkett Smith, Samuel L. Jackson and Charles S. Dutton.

It arrived during the extraordinary period of Black American cinema that also produced films including Boyz n the Hood, New Jack City, Juice and South Central.

For Monroe, Menace II Society marked the beginning of a screen career that would repeatedly bring him back to the kind of films that have since developed devoted followings among 1990s movie fans.

Monroe also appeared in the 1995 horror anthology Tales from the Hood, another film whose reputation has continued to grow in the decades since its release.

His other credits included the 1996 parody Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood and F. Gary Grey’s crime thriller Set It Off, starring Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah, Vivica A. Fox, and Kimberly Elise.

In 1998, Monroe appeared in Ice Cube’s directorial debut The Players Club.

Those movies gave Monroe a filmography deeply rooted in an era of filmmaking that remains hugely influential more than three decades later.

He continued acting in subsequent years, with later credits including the 2023 films Packz and Payment Received.

Samuel Monroe Jr. Remembered

News of Monroe’s death comes after his family had publicly documented the severity of his illness and sought support while he underwent treatment.

A fundraising campaign was established earlier this year to help with the financial impact of his medical care and support his family.

Samuel Monroe Jr. leaves behind his wife, his mother and his three children, Kingston, Milliano and Brooklynn.

For audiences who discovered him through Menace II Society, Tales from the Hood, Set It Off, or The Players Club, his death is another sad loss from a generation of performers whose work helped define 1990s cinema.
