Donnie Darko Is Finally Getting an Official Sequel 25 Years Later — But There’s a Twist

The new story is called The Philosophy of Time Travel, a title that should immediately ring a bell with anyone who remembers Roberta Sparrow's mysterious book from the original movie.

This isn't some loosely connected spin-off being handed to another writer, either. Richard Kelly, who wrote and directed Donnie Darko, has written the novel himself.

And apparently he hasn't exactly kept things short.

The book runs to roughly 800 pages and has reportedly taken Kelly around a decade to write.

Range Literary Publishing will publish it, and it's expected to arrive in the final quarter of 2026, tying its release to the 25th anniversary of Donnie Darko.

For a film that has generated theories, explanations, and late-night arguments for decades, an 800-page continuation feels strangely appropriate.

Rather than jumping straight into the present day, The Philosophy of Time Travel takes us back to 1988 and explores what happens in the immediate aftermath of the original film.

Without getting too deep into spoiler territory for a movie that's now 25 years old, the story will deal with the consequences of Donnie's death and what his family begins to uncover afterwards.

Kelly has described the novel as being constructed through documents and accounts involving Donnie's parents, Rose and Eddie Darko, as they try to understand exactly what happened to their son.

And as anyone familiar with Donnie Darko will probably guess, the answers aren't going to be particularly straightforward.

The book is expected to expand considerably on the mythology surrounding the original movie, including the strange events, alternate realities and ideas about time that have kept fans discussing the film since 2001.

In other words, we might finally get some answers.

Although knowing Donnie Darko, we'll probably end up with another 50 questions.

Here's where things get really interesting.

Kelly doesn't appear to see The Philosophy of Time Travel as the end of the story. He sees it as the beginning of something considerably larger.

His plan is for the novel's material to potentially become an animated or motion-capture film before the story eventually jumps far forward in time.

That later part of the story would move approximately 28 years into the future, opening the door for something fans have wanted for years: the return of the original Donnie Darko cast.

Kelly has stayed in contact with cast members over the years, but he hasn't formally asked them to return.

Instead, the novel effectively becomes his pitch.

If the larger project gets off the ground and the actors want to come back, Kelly's ultimate ambition is to continue the story in live action with the original characters now decades older.

That could mean bringing back faces from a cast that included Jake Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Mary McDonnell, and others.

Nothing on that front is confirmed yet, so we're a long way from saying Jake Gyllenhaal is officially returning as Donnie Darko.

But for the first time in years, there's a genuine roadmap for how another Donnie Darko movie could happen.

Of course, technically this isn't the first time someone has tried to continue Donnie Darko.

S. Darko arrived in 2009 and followed Donnie's younger sister Samantha, but Richard Kelly wasn't involved with the film.

That's an important distinction here.

The Philosophy of Time Travel comes directly from the man who created the original story, making this the continuation fans have been waiting to see from Kelly himself.

Considering how personal and downright complicated the mythology of Donnie Darko is, that makes a massive difference.

It's quite remarkable how much Donnie Darko has endured.

The film wasn't some enormous blockbuster when it arrived in 2001. It grew through word of mouth, home video and endless conversations between people desperately trying to explain what they'd just watched.

Jake Gyllenhaal's performance helped turn Donnie into an icon of early-2000s cinema, while Frank's nightmare-inducing rabbit costume became one of the era's most instantly recognisable images.

Then there's that soundtrack.

If you've ever heard Gary Jules' version of Mad World without immediately thinking about Donnie Darko, you're doing better than us.

Twenty-five years later, we're still talking about Tangent Universes, jet engines, Frank and exactly what happened during those 28 days.

Perhaps that's why this feels like the right way to bring Donnie Darko back.

Rather than rushing out another sequel simply because nostalgia sells, Kelly has spent years building something enormous that apparently requires an 800-page novel just to get started.

Whether it eventually leads to another movie remains to be seen.

But after 25 years, Richard Kelly is finally opening the door to the Donnie Darko universe again.

And something tells us things are about to get very strange.
