Saw X

Saw X was released in 2023 and directed by Kevin Greutert. Rather than simply retelling the plot, the film is worth revisiting for the characters, conflicts and ideas that give its story its identity.

John Kramer is told he has only months to live due to advanced brain cancer.

He attends a cancer support group meeting and befriends Henry Kessler, who later claims he has been cured by an experimental Norwegian cancer treatment conducted by a group led by Dr. Finn Pederson. That detail matters because it shapes the way the characters initially see one another.

A desperate John contacts the doctor's daughter Cecilia, who refers him to her clinic outside Mexico City. From there, the film can concentrate less on explaining the setup and more on what happens between the people inside it.

On arrival in Mexico, John is driven to the clinic and introduced to Cecilia and her team—anesthesiologist Mateo, nurse Valentina, and Dr Cortez—as well as patients Gabriela and Parker and the caretaker's young son Carlos, with whom he bonds.

John goes under for surgery and awakens to Cecilia telling him that he is now cancer-free.

Finding a new lease on life, he purchases a gift for Gabriela.

However, when he returns to the clinic, he finds it abandoned.

He uncovers a video simulating his supposed brain surgery and removes his bandages to find no scar on his head, revealing the entire operation to be a scam.

Saw X has more on its mind than the basic setup suggests. Parents protecting their children sits close to the film's centre, but it is explored through the characters rather than treated like a lesson.

Family matters just as much. The film keeps challenging the assumptions its characters make about one another, which is where much of its emotional weight comes from.

It also offers plenty on courage and heroism. Those ideas overlap rather than sitting in separate boxes, which helps the movie feel like a story about people rather than a checklist of themes.

Saw X could hardly be separated from the decade that produced it. Released in 2023, it carries the attitudes, style and filmmaking rhythms of the 1990s without needing to announce them.

It also sits comfortably within the era's drama, crime, horror, mystery and thriller filmmaking, even if the movie itself is more interesting than any single genre label suggests.

Watching Saw X now means seeing both what has lasted and what unmistakably belongs to 2023.

What still works best is the human material. Ideas about parents protecting their children, family, and courage haven't stopped being relevant just because the clothes, language, and cultural references belong to another era.

Some moments inevitably land differently for a modern audience. Revisiting an older film properly means enjoying what still works without pretending every choice has aged equally well.

Much of that staying power comes from the characters. Amanda Young, Mark Hoffman, and Cecilia Pederson remain useful shorthand for the personalities and pressures the film explores.

Saw X has lasted because people continue to recognise something in it. Nostalgia helps, but nostalgia alone does not keep a movie in the conversation for decades.
