Saw 3D

Saw 3D was released in 2010 and directed by Kevin Greutert. Rather than simply retelling the plot, the film is worth revisiting for the characters, conflicts and ideas that give its story its identity.

Some time later, another game takes place in a home improvement storefront at a shopping centre. That detail matters because it shapes how the characters first see one another.

Brad and Ryan are chained to opposite sides of a worktable secured to a sliding carriage with power saws while their mutual lover Dina is suspended above a third saw. From there, the film can concentrate less on explaining the setup and more on what happens between the people inside it.

The men have 60 seconds to shove the saws into their opponent to save Dina, who had manipulated both of them into fulfilling her needs by committing crimes.

Realising her betrayal, Ryan and Brad reach a truce and allow Dina to be bisected.

Meanwhile, Jill Tuck witnesses Mark Hoffman's escape from his trap and seeks help from internal affairs detective Matt Gibson; she offers to incriminate Hoffman in exchange for protection and immunity.

Meanwhile, Hoffman abducts a gang of white supremacists and places them in a trap at an abandoned junkyard that kills all of them.

Tobin Bell plays Jigsaw. He also abducts Bobby Dagen, a self-help guru who made fame and fortune by fabricating a story about surviving a Jigsaw trap.

The leader reveals himself to be Dr Gordon, who became Jigsaw's apprentice after surviving his test. It helps explain the influence Jigsaw has over the people around them.

Saw 3D has more on its mind than the basic setup suggests. Parents protecting their children sits close to the film's centre, but it is explored through the characters rather than treated like a lesson.

Heroism matters just as much. The film keeps challenging the assumptions its characters make about one another, which gives much of its emotional weight.

It also explores authority and freedom. Those ideas overlap rather than sitting in separate boxes, which helps the movie feel like a story about people rather than a checklist of themes.

Saw 3D could hardly be separated from the decade that produced it. Released in 2010, it carries the attitudes, style and filmmaking rhythms of the 1990s without needing to announce them.

It also sits comfortably within the era's horror and crime filmmaking, even if the movie itself is more interesting than any single genre label suggests.

Watching Saw 3D now means seeing both what has lasted and what unmistakably belongs to 2010.

What still works best is the human material. Ideas about parents protecting their children, heroism, and authority haven't stopped being relevant just because the clothes, language, and cultural references belong to another era.

Some moments inevitably land differently for a modern audience. Revisiting an older film properly means enjoying what still works without pretending every choice has aged equally well.
