Rocky II

The first fight leaves both men physically damaged.

Rocky is taken to the hospital with serious injuries, while Apollo finds himself surrounded by questions despite retaining his heavyweight championship.

For Rocky, however, the result barely matters.

He accomplished the one thing he set out to do: he stood toe-to-toe with the heavyweight champion for fifteen rounds.

For the first time, Rocky knows he wasn't simply another nobody from the neighbourhood.

But proving yourself once doesn't automatically tell you what to do next.

And Rocky decides that his fighting days should be over.

With money from the Creed fight and a future suddenly seeming possible, Rocky proposes to Adrian.

They marry and begin building a life together.

Rocky spends freely at first, enjoying things he could never afford before. But the money doesn't last, and his attempts to turn his newfound fame into advertising work prove difficult.

Rocky discovers that life outside boxing isn't as simple as he imagined.

His limited education restricts his options, physical work becomes necessary, and eventually he finds himself back at Mickey's gym—not as the fighter everyone is watching, but doing menial jobs around the place.

The man who briefly stood at the centre of the sporting world is once again trying to work out where he belongs.

Apollo won.

Officially, that should have been the end of it.

But the criticism gets under his skin.

People question whether Rocky might have beaten him under different circumstances. Letters arrive accusing Apollo of benefiting from the judges' decision. The fight, originally meant to be an entertaining exhibition, has damaged the champion's pride.

Apollo becomes obsessed with removing the doubt.

He wants a rematch.

More importantly, he wants a decisive victory.

Carl Weathers gives Apollo greater depth in the sequel, revealing how much of the champion's identity depends upon being recognised as unquestionably the best.

Rocky needs to discover whether he still wants to fight.

Apollo already knows.

Rocky's problems aren't simply financial.

The damage suffered during the first Creed fight makes returning to boxing dangerous.

Mickey initially refuses to train him.

He knows exactly what another encounter with Apollo could mean.

But Rocky's inability to find a place outside the sport keeps pulling him towards the gym, while Apollo's increasingly public challenge makes avoiding the rematch harder.

Eventually Mickey agrees.

If Rocky is going back into the ring, the old trainer intends to make sure he has a chance.

And that means rebuilding him.

Mickey understands something important about the first fight.

Apollo already knows how Rocky fights.

So Mickey decides to change the equation.

Rocky begins training to fight right-handed, forcing him to develop an unfamiliar stance and giving Apollo something he hasn't prepared for.

The training is difficult, and Rocky's mind isn't entirely on boxing.

Adrian is pregnant, their finances are strained, and Rocky increasingly questions whether returning to the ring is worth the risk.

Then everything changes.

Adrian never wanted Rocky to fight Apollo again.

Her fear isn't difficult to understand.

She watched what happened the first time.

When complications surrounding the birth of their son leave Adrian seriously ill, boxing suddenly becomes irrelevant.

Rocky stays beside her.

Training stops.

The rematch stops mattering.

Mickey joins Rocky at the hospital as they wait for Adrian to recover, creating some of the sequel's quietest and most affecting moments.

Eventually Adrian wakes.

Rocky asks what she wants him to do.

Her answer changes everything.

She tells him to win.

And Mickey provides the perfect response:

“What are we waiting for?”

Once Adrian supports Rocky, the entire film shifts gear.

Bill Conti's music returns as Rocky attacks his training with renewed purpose.

He runs through Philadelphia.

He works with Mickey.

His speed increases.

His conditioning improves.

And eventually something wonderful happens.

Children begin following him through the streets.

The group grows larger and larger until Rocky reaches the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, surrounded by kids, raising his arms above the city once again.

The first film's run was about Rocky discovering self-belief.

This time, Philadelphia believes in him.

Apollo isn't treating the rematch like an exhibition.

There is no misunderstanding this time.

He wants to destroy Rocky.

From the opening bell, the champion attacks aggressively, determined to prove that their first fight should never have been close.

Rocky absorbs enormous punishment but continues moving forward.

Round after round, the fight becomes another test of endurance.

Mickey's strategy eventually comes into play as Rocky switches back to his natural southpaw stance, changing the contest's rhythm.

By the fifteenth round, both men are exhausted.

But neither is willing to stop.

The final round becomes a battle of pure exhaustion.

Rocky and Apollo exchange punches until both men collapse.

The referee begins counting.

Neither fighter can immediately stand.

The heavyweight championship of the world comes down to one simple question:

Who can get back on their feet?

Apollo tries.

Rocky tries.

The count gets closer to ten.

Apollo falls back.

Rocky rises.

For the first time, Rocky Balboa is the heavyweight champion of the world.

The championship means something very different from Rocky's achievement in the first film.

Originally, he didn't need to win.

Going the distance was enough.

This time he has returned stronger, overcome his fear, survived another fifteen-round war and defeated the greatest fighter in the world.

Surrounded by reporters and a roaring crowd, Rocky takes the microphone.

But once again, his thoughts immediately turn away from the belt.

He has a message for Adrian.

The moment completes the journey begun in the first film.

Rocky Balboa isn't simply the unknown fighter who got lucky enough to receive a title shot anymore.

He's the heavyweight champion of the world.

Rocky II marked an important behind-the-camera change.

Sylvester Stallone had written the original Rocky, but John G. Avildsen directed it.

For the sequel, Stallone took over as both writer and director while continuing to play Rocky.

That gave him increasing creative control over the character and the world surrounding him — something that would shape much of the franchise going forward.

The sequel retains the emotional relationships that made the original work while gradually increasing the scale of the boxing, training and spectacle.

The Rocky formula was beginning to take shape.

Sequels often face a fundamental problem when the first movie already delivered the perfect ending.

Rocky II answers by asking what happens after the impossible opportunity.

Rocky proved he belonged in the ring.

Now he has to discover whether he belongs anywhere else.

Apollo's obsession with the rematch gives Rocky another chance, but the sequel makes the journey about more than winning a championship. Adrian, Mickey and the life Rocky is trying to build remain at the centre of his decisions.

When Rocky finally wins the belt, it works because we've watched him earn far more than a sporting victory.

The underdog became a contender.

Then the contender became champion.

And the legend of Rocky Balboa was only getting started.
