Uma Thurman
Uma Thurman has a screen presence that can shift from poised stillness to full theatrical force without losing its edge. Born in Boston on April 29, 1970, she began working as a fashion model at 15 before making her film debut in the 1987 thriller Kiss Daddy Goodnight. By 1988, she was already moving between very different kinds of cinema: a brief appearance as Venus in Terry Gilliam's The Adventures of Baron Munchausen and the more substantial role of a naive teenager drawn into manipulation in Dangerous Liaisons. That ability to balance composure with something stranger underneath became especially valuable in Pulp Fiction. As Mia Wallace, Thurman created a performance built on cool delivery, dry humor and an undercurrent of danger. The role earned her Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actress and placed her at the center of one of the defining films of the 1990s. She has also shown a willingness to meet heightened material on its own terms. In Batman & Robin, she plays Poison Ivy with a knowingly extravagant style suited to the film's comic-book excess. It is a very different mode from Pulp Fiction, but both performances depend on her control of gesture, timing and attitude. Her reunion with Quentin Tarantino for Kill Bill: Volume 1 and Kill Bill: Volume 2 gave Thurman her most physically demanding role. As the revenge-driven assassin Beatrix Kiddo, she combines martial arts, swordsmanship and emotional resolve across the two films. Thurman trained for three months, and the character was developed by her and Tarantino from an idea conceived during Pulp Fiction. Her work in each volume brought another Golden Globe nomination. Thurman's wider career includes film, television, voice acting, producing and screenwriting, but these films show the shape of her appeal particularly clearly. Whether entering a fantasy as a goddess, navigating dangerous social games, playing a supervillain or carrying a two-part revenge epic, she brings an alert, distinctive presence that rewards another look.
