Tobey Maguire
Tobey Maguire has built a career around a screen presence that can appear open and vulnerable one moment, guarded the next. Born in Santa Monica on June 27, 1975, he came to acting without a conventional plan: as a child, he considered becoming a chef before his mother offered him $100 to take a drama class. After leaving high school, he committed to pursuing acting. His early film work included Empire Records, followed by a run of late-1990s roles that made good use of his understated style. In Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, he played the hitchhiker who crosses paths with Raoul Duke and Dr. Gonzo, briefly entering the movie’s hallucinatory journey. Pleasantville gave him a lead role in a very different kind of heightened reality, one whose polished surface gradually gives way to something more complicated. Maguire’s restrained delivery and wide-eyed watchfulness suited both the innocence and unease of the material. That combination became central to Spider-Man in 2002. As Peter Parker and the title hero, Maguire conveyed wonder, awkwardness and responsibility without losing the ordinary person beneath the costume. The film’s success made him a star, and he returned to the character for two sequels, including Spider-Man 3 in 2007. His version of Peter remained defined less by swagger than by uncertainty, making the pressures of heroism feel personal. Maguire’s career has also extended beyond superhero films. He played jockey Red Pollard in Seabiscuit, war veteran Sam Cahill in Brothers and narrator Nick Carraway in The Great Gatsby. He later portrayed chess player Bobby Fischer in Pawn Sacrifice, voiced the adult Tim Templeton in The Boss Baby and returned as Spider-Man in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Alongside acting, he has worked as a film producer and executive producer, including on projects in which he also appeared. Across comedy, drama, fantasy and blockbuster filmmaking, his most distinctive performances tend to begin with stillness—and let the strain beneath it do the talking.
