Steven Seagal
Steven Seagal built his screen identity around a particular kind of action hero: controlled, physically assured and rarely interested in wasting words. Born on April 10, 1952, in Lansing, Michigan, he is an American actor, martial artist and film producer whose background in disciplines including aikido and judo became central to his work on screen. His first film as an actor was Above the Law, released in 1988 and directed by Andrew Davis. The movie established the approach that would define Seagal’s early career, combining police-thriller plotting with close-quarters martial arts and a notably severe leading presence. Its success was followed by Hard to Kill, Marked for Death and Out for Justice, a run of box-office hits that secured his place among the action stars of the period. Seagal reunited with Davis for Under Siege in 1992. Set largely aboard a battleship, the film found an effective framework for his economical performance style and brought him mainstream success. Critics also responded strongly to the film, with particular praise given to Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey as its villains. Under Siege remains widely regarded as a high point in Seagal’s filmography and in early-1990s action cinema. His career soon expanded beyond acting. Seagal directed and starred in the environmentally themed On Deadly Ground in 1994, then returned for Under Siege 2: Dark Territory the following year. Later theatrical work included Executive Decision, The Glimmer Man, Fire Down Below and Exit Wounds, which was viewed as a comeback on its 2001 release. From the early 2000s onward, much of Seagal’s output shifted toward direct-to-video action films, often with producer or writing credits alongside his performances. He also played a villain in Robert Rodriguez’s Machete and starred in the television action series True Justice. Across those different phases, Above the Law and Under Siege remain the clearest examples of the stern, martial-arts-driven screen persona that made his name.
