Richard Gere’s screen career is closely tied to a particular kind of leading man: composed, sharply dressed and confident, but rarely as settled as he first appears. Born in Philadelphia on August 31, 1949, Gere studied philosophy at the University of Massachusetts Amherst on a gymnastics scholarship before leaving after two years. His professional acting work began onstage in 1969, and he later appeared in the original London production of Grease and the 1979 Broadway production of Bent, earning a Theatre World Award for the latter. After moving into films during the 1970s, Gere found a defining early role in American Gigolo (1980). The crime drama significantly raised his profile and established the controlled screen presence that would become central to his appeal. An Officer and a Gentleman (1982) pushed him further into stardom. Gere studied karate for the role, and his performance brought him his first Golden Globe nomination. Pretty Woman (1990) marked another major turn. Playing opposite Julia Roberts, Gere brought restraint to a romantic comedy built around contrasting worlds and personalities. The film earned him a second Golden Globe nomination, while Gere also composed and performed its piano theme. Together, American Gigolo, An Officer and a Gentleman and Pretty Woman offer a useful map of his early star persona: elegance on the surface, emotional distance underneath, and enough vulnerability to complicate both. Gere continued across romance, thrillers, drama and musicals. His performance in Chicago (2002) earned him his first Golden Globe win, and he studied tap for three months for the role of lawyer Billy Flynn. Later, independent films gave him room to move away from the polished romantic lead. His portrayal of businessman Robert Miller in Arbitrage (2012) brought a fourth Golden Globe nomination, while Norman (2016) presented a notable departure from his traditional screen persona. It is a career shaped not just by movie-star assurance, but by a recurring willingness to test what sits behind it.
