Born in Alcobendas, Spain, on 28 April 1974, Penélope Cruz came to acting with a dancer’s discipline. She studied classical ballet for nine years at Spain’s National Conservatory, followed by training in Spanish ballet and theatre. Her interest in acting took hold after she saw Pedro Almodóvar’s Tie Me Up! as a teenager, and at 15 she secured representation after an audition involving more than 300 applicants. Cruz’s feature debut came in Jamón, jamón, but the shape of her career soon became more interesting than any simple breakthrough story. She moved between Spanish and American productions, comedy and melodrama, while developing a screen presence that can shift from warmth to volatility without losing its grounding. Her collaborations with Almodóvar have been central to that range. She appeared in Live Flesh and All About My Mother before taking the role of Raimunda in Volver, a performance that brought her a Goya Award and made her the first Spanish actress nominated for an Academy Award. For Please Rewind viewers, Cruz appears in Cameron Crowe’s Vanilla Sky as Sofia Serrano. It was a role she already knew: the film remade Alejandro Amenábar’s Open Your Eyes, in which she had also played Sofia. That unusual continuity gives her a distinctive place in both versions of the story, carrying the same character from a Spanish science-fiction drama into a major American production. Her American work has included Blow, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Nine and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. As María Elena in Vicky Cristina Barcelona, she won the Academy Award and BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actress, becoming the first Spanish actress to receive an Oscar. Later performances continued to show her reach, from Donatella Versace in The Assassination of Gianni Versace to Janis in Almodóvar’s Parallel Mothers. The latter earned Cruz the Volpi Cup for Best Actress and another Academy Award nomination. Across languages, genres and industries, Cruz has built a career defined less by a single screen persona than by her ability to make glamour, comedy, hurt and determination occupy the same frame.
