Michelle Yeoh
Michelle Yeoh has built a screen career around poise under pressure. Whether moving through an action sequence or holding a scene in stillness, she brings the same sense of control: calm, alert and ready to strike. Born in Ipoh, Malaysia, in 1962, Yeoh began ballet at four and later trained as a dancer in England. A spinal injury ended her hopes of becoming a professional ballet dancer, but that grounding in movement would become central to her work on screen. After winning the Miss Malaysia World contest in 1983, Yeoh entered acting through Hong Kong action cinema. She learned Cantonese as her career developed and performed her own stunts, taking her first lead role in Yes, Madam in 1985. Following a period away from acting, she returned with Police Story 3: Supercop and continued through films including The Heroic Trio, Tai Chi Master and Wing Chun. Her move into Hollywood brought Tomorrow Never Dies, one of the films featured by Please Rewind. As Wai Lin opposite Pierce Brosnan, Yeoh was more than a supporting presence in the Bond machinery. She performed her own fighting scenes and gave the film a capable, self-possessed agent who could meet Bond on equal terms. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon offered another defining showcase. Playing Yu Shu Lien, Yeoh balanced martial precision with restraint and emotional weight. She learned her Mandarin dialogue phonetically for the role, and the performance earned her a BAFTA nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role. Yeoh’s later career has moved comfortably across genres and formats, from Crazy Rich Asians and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings to Star Trek: Discovery. In Everything Everywhere All at Once, she played laundromat owner Evelyn Quan Wang and won the Academy Award for Best Actress, becoming the first Malaysian and the first Asian woman to receive the award. It was a role that drew on the full range of her screen presence: physical command, comic timing, vulnerability and the ability to make chaos feel deeply human.
