Matthew McConaughey has built a career around an unusual combination of relaxed charm and restless ambition. Born on November 4, 1969, in Uvalde, Texas, he studied Radio-Television-Film at the University of Texas at Austin, graduating in 1993. That same year brought the role that still feels like the clearest starting point for his screen persona: Wooderson in Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused. Wooderson is part of a large ensemble, but McConaughey gives him an easy, slightly disreputable confidence that makes every appearance count. The role was initially small, then expanded during production, with much of it improvised or written on the spot. It established McConaughey as an actor who could hold the frame without seeming to push for attention. His career soon widened through films including Lone Star, A Time to Kill, Contact, Amistad and The Newton Boys. In the early 2000s, romantic comedies such as The Wedding Planner, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Fool’s Gold and Ghosts of Girlfriends Past made his laid-back appeal central to his public image. McConaughey later sought more dramatic material, beginning the stretch commonly called the “McConaissance.” That change included Bernie, Magic Mike and Mud, followed by Dallas Buyers Club, in which he played Ron Woodroof. The performance earned him the Academy Award, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award for leading actor. He also appeared as Mark Hanna in The Wolf of Wall Street, played Rust Cohle in True Detective and starred as Cooper in Interstellar. Together, those roles showed how effectively his familiar ease could be redirected into obsession, weariness and emotional pressure. McConaughey’s work extends beyond film acting to television, voice acting, screenwriting and producing. Yet Dazed and Confused remains an essential rewind: an early performance with the looseness, timing and self-possession that would keep resurfacing throughout his career.
