Matt Damon
Matt Damon has built a career around a useful tension: he can appear completely at home in a movie while still keeping part of a character out of reach. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on October 8, 1970, Damon acted in high-school theater before attending Harvard University. He left without completing his degree, but an English-class film treatment he began there eventually became Good Will Hunting. That 1997 film changed the shape of his career. Damon co-wrote the screenplay with Ben Affleck, and the pair won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. As Will, Damon also found an early template for his screen presence: outwardly capable, inwardly guarded and never too eager to explain himself. Appearances in Chasing Amy and Saving Private Ryan followed, while Rounders gave him a reformed gambler drawn back to high-stakes poker. The Talented Mr. Ripley pushed his restraint somewhere darker, with Damon playing Tom Ripleyโs movement from eager outsider to cold calculation. Dogma, released the same year, let him shift into irreverent comedy as a fallen angel opposite Affleck. The 2000s brought two very different film series. In Oceanโs Eleven, Oceanโs Twelve and Oceanโs Thirteen, Damon played thief Linus Caldwell as part of Steven Soderberghโs relaxed ensemble. The Bourne Identity gave him the opposite challenge: an amnesiac assassin whose body knows more than his mind. Damon trained extensively for the role and carried its focused physicality through The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum. Those films made his economy an asset; a glance, a pause or a sudden burst of movement could do the work of a speech. The Departed used that same contained quality for menace, casting Damon as an undercover mobster inside the Massachusetts State Police. Across these films, his range is less about showy transformation than calibration. Whether he is playing a mathematical prodigy, a poker player, a con man, a soldier, a thief or a hunted operative, Damon is especially effective when competence and uncertainty occupy the same frame.
