Martin Lawrence
Martin Lawrence has built a screen career around fast reactions, restless energy and the ability to make frustration funny. Born on April 16, 1965, in Frankfurt, West Germany, while his father was serving in the United States Air Force, he later grew up in the Washington, D.C., area. His first and middle names, Martin Fitzgerald, were chosen in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Before acting took over, Lawrence pursued boxing and became a Mid-Atlantic Golden Gloves contender. He also performed comedy around Washington while supporting himself with odd jobs. After comedian Ritch Shydner encouraged him to make connections in New York, Lawrence moved to the city and performed at The Improv. Television soon followed, with Maurice Warfield in What's Happening Now!! becoming his first acting role. His breakthrough in movies came as Cee in Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing. It is a supporting part within a large ensemble, but Lawrence fits naturally into the film's lively neighborhood rhythms. More film roles followed, including House Party, House Party 2, Boomerang and Talkin' Dirty After Dark. At the same time, Lawrence became a major television presence. He hosted HBO's Def Comedy Jam, a series that gave wider exposure to numerous comedians, and starred in the Fox sitcom Martin from 1992 to 1997. The show gave him room to build comedy through characters, voices and physical performance rather than relying on punchlines alone. Bad Boys expanded that energy into action comedy. Appearing opposite Will Smith, Lawrence played Detective Marcus Burnett, the more anxious and exasperated half of the central partnership. The role became one of his most durable, and he returned as Burnett in Bad Boys for Life in 2020. His wider film work includes Nothing to Lose, Life, Blue Streak, Big Momma's House, Wild Hogs and College Road Trip. He also voiced Boog in Open Season. Across television, stand-up, voice acting and movies, Lawrence's appeal has remained rooted in a recognizable comic pressure: a man trying to keep control while everything around him pushes in the opposite direction.
