Liv Tyler
Liv Tyler has built a screen career around a quality that works equally well in intimate drama, large-scale fantasy and nerve-shredding horror: a calm, open presence that can carry considerable emotional weight. Born in East Harlem on July 1, 1977, Tyler began modeling at 14 before moving into acting, making her feature debut in Silent Fall in 1994. Empire Records arrived the following year, placing her within the young ensemble of a comedy-drama that became one of the defining early titles in her filmography. She described making it as one of her best experiences. Her breakthrough came with Bernardo Bertolucci’s Stealing Beauty in 1996, where her composed performance drew favorable attention and established her as more than a familiar face from modeling and music videos. By Armageddon in 1998, Tyler had moved firmly into blockbuster territory, playing the daughter of Bruce Willis’s character and the love interest of Ben Affleck’s. She initially turned the role down, then accepted partly because the scale of the project frightened her and she wanted to take that risk. Her casting as Arwen Undómiel in The Lord of the Rings gave Tyler one of her best-known roles. She learned Tolkien’s Elvish language for The Fellowship of the Ring and returned for The Two Towers and The Return of the King, bringing an earnest stillness to a story crowded with battles, creatures and kingdoms. The year 2008 showed another side of her range. In The Strangers, she played one half of a couple terrorized by masked assailants in a remote house, later calling it the most challenging role of her career. She also appeared as Dr. Betty Ross opposite Edward Norton in The Incredible Hulk, balancing the film’s physical spectacle with its central relationship. Tyler reprised Betty Ross in Captain America: Brave New World in 2025, returning to the character 15 years after her first appearance.
