Laurence Fishburne

Laurence Fishburne has built a career that resists being reduced to one role, even when that role is Morpheus. Born in Augusta, Georgia, on July 30, 1961, Fishburne began acting at 11 and spent much of his early career credited as Larry Fishburne. He was only 14 when production started on Apocalypse Now, having claimed to be older to secure the part of Mr. Clean. That unusually early start developed into a career spanning film, television and theatre. During the 1980s, Fishburne moved between screen work and the stage, appearing in The Color Purple, Pee-wee’s Playhouse, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and Spike Lee’s School Daze. By the early 1990s, performances in King of New York, Boyz n the Hood and Deep Cover had established his ability to bring intelligence, control and underlying danger to very different characters. His stage performance in August Wilson’s Two Trains Running earned him a Tony Award, while his work in the television anthology TriBeCa brought an Emmy. In 1993, his portrayal of Ike Turner in What’s Love Got to Do with It received an Oscar nomination. Roles in Othello, Higher Learning and Event Horizon further showed the range behind his commanding screen presence. For many moviegoers, Fishburne remains inseparable from Morpheus, Neo’s mentor in The Matrix and its sequels. In Please Rewind’s The Matrix Revolutions, he returns to the role with the calm authority that made Morpheus such a defining figure in the trilogy, even as the story pushes toward full-scale war and resolution. Fishburne’s later work has continued across genres and formats, including CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Hannibal, Black-ish, Man of Steel, John Wick: Chapter 2 and Ant-Man and the Wasp. He has also worked as a director, producer, playwright, screenwriter and voice actor. Across those different roles, the constant is a measured intensity: Fishburne can hold a scene through stillness, then make a shift in tone feel decisive.
