Kevin Costner
Kevin Costner’s best-known movies often place an ordinary-looking, quietly determined man inside a story larger than himself. That quality helped make him one of the defining American screen stars of the late 1980s and early 1990s, equally comfortable in baseball dramas, political thrillers, Westerns and full-scale adventures. Born on January 18, 1955, in Lynwood, California, Costner became interested in acting during his final year at California State University, Fullerton. An early screen appearance came as “Frat Boy #1” in Night Shift (1982), but Silverado (1985) provided his breakout role. By 1987, he had reached movie-star territory with two sharply different pictures: The Untouchables, in which he played federal agent Eliot Ness, and the twist-driven thriller No Way Out. Bull Durham (1988) and Field of Dreams (1989) made baseball central to his screen identity, while also showing the appeal of his restrained style. Costner could play certainty without making it seem effortless; there was often a trace of doubt, stubbornness or longing under the surface. Dances with Wolves (1990) expanded his ambitions behind the camera. Costner directed and starred in the Western epic, which won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. He followed it with two major 1991 releases: the action-adventure Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, which he also produced, and Oliver Stone’s JFK, where he played district attorney Jim Garrison with a measured intensity that suited the film’s consuming search for answers. Waterworld (1995) pushed Costner into post-apocalyptic spectacle. Although the film was regarded as a commercial disappointment at the time, its scale and unusual marine setting have kept it part of the conversation around his most ambitious work. Costner’s career extends beyond acting to directing, producing and screenwriting, but his strongest screen persona remains remarkably consistent: self-contained, purposeful and drawn toward stories about conviction, landscape and the difficult pull of a personal code.
