Kevin Bacon
Kevin Bacon has built the kind of career that rewards looking beyond the obvious headline. Born in Philadelphia on July 8, 1958, he studied theater at the Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Arts before leaving home at 17 to pursue the stage in New York. Early film and television work followed, but Diner gave him a role that caught the attention of critics and audiences. Two years later, Footloose made him a leading man. That success brought typecasting, and Bacon responded by moving toward parts that complicated his screen image. His brief appearance in Planes, Trains and Automobiles was followed by two very different 1990 releases: Tremors, in which he battles creatures attacking a small town, and Flatliners, where he plays a medical student experimenting with death. Together, they show the range that would become central to his career: approachable one moment, uneasy or morally slippery the next. By the early 1990s, Bacon had deliberately begun remaking himself as a character actor. JFK placed him inside Oliver Stone’s sprawling political drama, while A Few Good Men gave him the role of a prosecuting attorney in a military courtroom. In The River Wild, opposite Meryl Streep, he took another dark turn and received a Golden Globe nomination. Apollo 13 then put him in a major ensemble production, followed by another unsettling role in Sleepers. Bacon’s choices have rarely suggested an interest in protecting one fixed screen persona. He can carry youthful energy, dry humor, menace or tightly controlled authority, often making a supporting role feel essential to the movie around it. That quality remained evident in Mystic River, where he appeared alongside Sean Penn and Tim Robbins in Clint Eastwood’s drama. Across these films, his career is less a straight climb than a steady process of reinvention—and a strong argument for the value of the character actor who can also be the star.
