Julia Roberts has built a screen career around a rare combination of immediacy, comic timing and resolve. Born in Atlanta on October 28, 1967, she moved to New York after high school to pursue acting, signing with a modeling agency and taking acting classes. Her early breakthrough came with Mystic Pizza, in which she played a Portuguese-American teenager working at a pizza parlor. The performance already carried the fierce energy that would become central to her appeal. Pretty Woman turned Roberts into a worldwide star in 1990. As an assertive sex worker opposite Richard Gere, she brought wit and self-possession to a role that earned her a second Academy Award nomination and second Golden Globe win. Released that same year, Flatliners placed her in a much darker ensemble as one of five students conducting dangerous near-death experiments. Hook followed in 1991, with Roberts taking on the fantasy role of Tinkerbell. Her command of romantic comedy remained especially clear in Notting Hill. Playing a famous actress who falls for a struggling bookstore owner, Roberts had to make celebrity seem both dazzling and burdensome. The filmโ€™s balance of movie-star glamour and emotional wariness suited her particularly well. Roberts later joined Steven Soderberghโ€™s ensemble for Oceanโ€™s Eleven as Tess Ocean, the ex-wife of Danny Ocean. She returned in Oceanโ€™s Twelve, where the sequel playfully blurred actor and character by having Tess impersonate Julia Roberts herself. It is a knowingly strange gag, and one that depends entirely on the audience recognizing the particular weight of her screen persona. Beyond these Please Rewind movies, Roberts won the Academy Award for Best Actress for Erin Brockovich and has worked across film, television, stage and voice acting. From the restless young women of Mystic Pizza and Pretty Woman to the poised, self-aware figures of Notting Hill and the Oceanโ€™s films, her career shows how warmth can coexist with sharpnessโ€”and how a familiar smile can still leave room for surprise.
