Johnny Depp has built his screen career around transformation, often favouring eccentric outsiders and heightened character work over straightforward leading-man roles. Born on June 9, 1963, in Owensboro, Kentucky, Depp initially pursued music rather than acting. He began playing guitar at 12, left high school at 16 to become a rock musician and later moved to Los Angeles with his band. Acting arrived almost by accident. After Nicolas Cage encouraged him to audition, Depp landed his first film role in Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street. Television made him widely known through 21 Jump Street, where he played an undercover police officer and became a teen idol. Uncomfortable with that image, he began choosing parts that offered stranger, riskier possibilities. That instinct shaped much of his filmography. In Cry-Baby, he leaned into John Waters’s knowingly exaggerated world; in Edward Scissorhands, he created a sympathetic figure through movement, expression and carefully limited dialogue. The latter began a long-running collaboration with director Tim Burton that continued through Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride, Sweeney Todd and Alice in Wonderland. Their films repeatedly gave Depp room to play with physicality, voice and theatrical design. His most commercially prominent role arrived with Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Depp’s comic, off-balance performance earned Academy Award, Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations, as well as a Screen Actors Guild Award. He returned as Sparrow across four sequels. Elsewhere, he has moved between crime drama in Donnie Brasco, literary adaptation in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, historical roles in Finding Neverland and Public Enemies, and voice work as the title character in Rango. Depp has also worked behind the camera as a producer and director. More than 25 years after directing The Brave, he returned to feature directing with Modì, Three Days on the Wing of Madness. Across those shifts, music has remained part of his creative life alongside acting and filmmaking.
