John Turturro
John Turturro has built a career around characters who rarely seem settled, even when they are trying very hard to appear in control. Born in Brooklyn on February 28, 1957, he studied theater at SUNY New Paltz before completing an MFA at the Yale School of Drama. His first film appearance was a non-speaking extra role in Raging Bull, but the parts soon grew larger and more distinctive. During the 1980s, Turturro appeared in Desperately Seeking Susan, To Live and Die in L.A., The Color of Money and Hannah and Her Sisters. His performance in Five Corners caught the attention of Spike Lee, who cast him in Do the Right Thing. That film began a long-running collaboration between the actor and director, extending across nine films. Turturro also developed an important screen partnership with the Coen brothers. After appearing in Miller's Crossing, he took the lead role in Barton Fink, playing a writer caught between artistic ambition and an increasingly nightmarish reality. He later appeared in The Big Lebowski, bringing tightly wound comic energy to one of the film's most conspicuous supporting characters. Rounders offered another place for his ability to make a supporting performance feel precisely observed rather than merely functional. His range stretches from drama to broad studio comedy and spectacle. In Transformers, he played Sector 7 agent Seymour Simmons, a role he continued across four films in the live-action series. His television work includes an Emmy-winning performance as Ambrose, the brother of Adrian Monk, in Monk, as well as an Emmy-nominated turn in The Night Of. Since 2022, he has played Irving Bailiff in Severance. Turturro's work extends beyond acting. He has written and directed films, including Romance and Cigarettes, and produced, directed and acted in Illuminata. Whether leading a psychologically charged drama or cutting into a larger ensemble, he brings an alert, restless quality that makes even brief appearances worth watching closely.
