John Cusack
John Cusack has built a screen career around an appealing contradiction: he can seem approachable and guarded, romantic and cynical, often within the same performance. Born in Evanston, Illinois, on June 28, 1966, he began acting in films in the early 1980s, appearing in a minor role in Sixteen Candles before breaking through in The Sure Thing. Better Off Dead gave him another teenage comedy with a darker, stranger edge, while Broadcast News and Eight Men Out placed him within sharply observed ensemble filmmaking. Say Anything... made especially good use of Cusack’s ability to play sincerity without sanding away a character’s awkwardness. As Lloyd Dobler, he brought dimension to a role that became closely associated with the film’s boombox scene. That mixture of vulnerability, wit and stubborn conviction would remain central to much of his screen appeal. His 1997 run shows how readily he could shift registers. Cusack co-wrote and starred in Grosse Pointe Blank, playing an assassin who returns home for his ten-year high school reunion. The film lets romance, anxiety and crime collide around his dry, tightly wound presence. The same year, he played U.S. Marshal Vince Larkin in Con Air and voiced Dimitri in Anastasia, moving from action spectacle to animation without losing his recognizable rhythms. Cusack also became a natural fit for films with unusual premises and uneasy atmospheres. In Being John Malkovich, he played a puppeteer who discovers a portal into John Malkovich’s mind, meeting Charlie Kaufman’s surreal screenplay with a performance grounded in human frustration and selfishness. His appearance in The Thin Red Line placed him within a very different kind of ensemble, while 1408 pushed him into the sustained psychological pressure of a Stephen King adaptation. An actor, producer and screenwriter, Cusack has moved between comedy, romance, crime, action, animation, war drama and horror. Across those shifts, his most distinctive quality is a sense of thought in motion: the feeling that his characters are questioning the room, themselves and the story even as they move through it.
