Jodie Foster has spent much of her career playing people who think before they move. Whether facing institutional indifference, psychological danger or a crisis at 30,000 feet, she brings a watchful intelligence to the screen—a sense that her characters are always assessing the room. Born Alicia Christian Foster in Los Angeles on November 19, 1962, she began working at three in a television advertisement and accumulated extensive television experience before moving into films. Her childhood career included Taxi Driver, which earned her an Academy Award nomination for supporting actress. Foster later attended Yale University, graduating magna cum laude in 1985 after studying African-American literature. Her transition into adult roles found its decisive moment in The Accused (1988). Playing a rape survivor fighting for justice, Foster won the Academy Award and Golden Globe for her performance. The Silence of the Lambs (1991) gave her another defining role as FBI trainee Clarice Starling. Foster’s controlled, attentive performance makes Clarice’s intelligence central to the film, and it brought her a second Academy Award as well as Golden Globe and BAFTA wins. The Please Rewind movies also show how comfortably she can shift tone. In Maverick (1994), she plays a con artist in a Western comedy, bringing a lighter, more playful rhythm to the kind of sharp-minded character she handles so well. Flightplan (2005) puts her at the centre of an airborne mystery as a mother searching for her missing daughter. A year later, she appeared in Spike Lee’s bank-heist thriller Inside Man (2006), alongside Denzel Washington and Clive Owen. Foster’s career has never been limited to acting. She made her feature directing debut with Little Man Tate in 1991 and later directed Home for the Holidays, The Beaver and Money Monster, as well as episodes of Orange Is the New Black, House of Cards and Black Mirror. Across acting, directing and producing, her work reflects a sustained interest in capable, complicated people under pressure—and in stories that trust audiences to pay attention.
