Please Rewind Talent Wall
Jack Nicholson
Jack Nicholson has a way of making control and chaos look like two sides of the same performance. A raised eyebrow, a clipped line or a sudden burst of anger can shift the temperature of an entire scene. That unpredictable screen presence has served him across horror, drama, comedy, crime and comic-book spectacle. Born on April 22, 1937, in Neptune City, New Jersey, Nicholson began with small stage and television parts before making his film debut in The Cry Baby Killer in 1958. He also pursued writing and directing, including writing the screenplay for The Trip and co-writing Head. His acting breakthrough came with Easy Rider, followed by the defining run of Five Easy Pieces, Chinatown and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. The latter brought him his first Academy Award for Best Actor. The Please Rewind movies capture just how wide his range became. In The Shining, he plays writer Jack Torrance, turning agitation, resentment and dark humor into something increasingly frightening. Reds finds him working at a quieter pitch as playwright Eugene O’Neill, while Terms of Endearment casts him as retired astronaut Garrett Breedlove, a performance that earned his second Academy Award. Nicholson could also step into an ensemble and immediately alter its rhythm. He appears in both The Witches of Eastwick and Broadcast News, then embraces grand theatricality as the Joker in Tim Burton’s Batman. In A Few Good Men, his hot-headed Colonel Jessup brings concentrated force to the courtroom drama. Mars Attacks! gave him two roles—President James Dale and property developer Art Land—within the same gleefully unruly comedy. He won a third Academy Award for As Good as It Gets and later returned to darker territory as Boston mob boss Frank Costello in Martin Scorsese’s The Departed. Across these films, Nicholson’s gift is not simply intensity. It is the sense that amusement, menace, charm and defiance might all arrive in the same moment.
