Ian McKellen
Born in Burnley on 25 May 1939, Ian McKellen found acting early at Bolton Little Theatre before studying English literature at Cambridge, where he appeared in 23 productions with the Marlowe Society. His first professional appearance came in 1961, and theatre remained the foundation of a career that would eventually stretch across stage, film, television and voice work. By the 1970s, McKellen was firmly established in British theatre, taking leading Shakespearean roles with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre. His command of language and ability to make theatrical scale feel personal became equally valuable on camera. A Broadway performance as Antonio Salieri in Amadeus brought him a Tony Award, while his screen adaptation of Richard III showcased him as both actor and screenwriter. His title performance earned BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations and won the European Film Award for Best Actor. Gods and Monsters later brought an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. The films on Please Rewind trace an especially interesting route through his screen career. Michael Mann’s The Keep placed him inside a brooding supernatural horror story in 1983, while Last Action Hero gave him a place in a knowingly oversized Hollywood spectacle a decade later. Then came two roles that brought his theatrical authority to blockbuster fantasy without sanding away its edges. As Magneto in X-Men, X2 and X-Men: The Last Stand, McKellen played a comic-book antagonist with conviction and gravity. As Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers, he could be stern, playful and reassuring, often within the same scene. His work in Fellowship earned a Screen Actors Guild Award and an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. That range is central to McKellen’s appeal: he can enlarge a scene without overwhelming it. Whether facing mutants, monsters or Middle-earth, he brings the precision of a stage actor and the ease of someone who understands exactly how much the camera needs.
