Heath Ledger
Heath Ledger brought a rare combination of openness and intensity to the screen. Born in Perth, Western Australia, on 4 April 1979, he began acting in a school production of Peter Pan at ten and left school at sixteen to pursue acting professionally. Early parts in Australian television, followed by his feature debut in Blackrock, gave way to the film that introduced him to a much wider audience: the 1999 teen comedy 10 Things I Hate About You. Ledger’s charm suited the movie, but his later work made clear that he was never interested in remaining one kind of leading man. That range is especially visible across the three Ledger films featured by Please Rewind. In Brokeback Mountain, he played Wyoming ranch hand Ennis Del Mar, whose relationship with Jack Twist becomes an anguished story of love and loss. Ledger built the performance through restraint, making Ennis’s silences and guarded physicality carry enormous weight. The role earned him best actor prizes from the New York Film Critics Circle and San Francisco Film Critics Circle, along with Academy Award, BAFTA, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations. Three years later, The Dark Knight revealed a radically different side of his work. As the Joker, Ledger gave Christopher Nolan’s film a volatile, menacing centre, turning the character into something both theatrical and deeply unsettling. The performance brought him a posthumous Academy Award and Golden Globe for supporting actor after his death in 2008. Ledger’s career also included The Patriot, Monster’s Ball, A Knight’s Tale, Candy and I’m Not There, as well as work behind the camera. He directed music videos for artists including N’fa and Ben Harper and hoped to move into feature directing. His screen career was brief, but its shape remains striking: from the approachable romantic energy of 10 Things I Hate About You to the emotional containment of Brokeback Mountain and the controlled chaos of The Dark Knight, Ledger kept searching for new ways to transform.
