Goldie Hawn has built a screen career around a deceptively difficult balance: buoyant comic energy paired with sharp timing and an ability to let vulnerability show beneath the joke. Born in Washington, D.C., in 1945 and raised in Takoma Park, Maryland, she began ballet and tap lessons at three. Dance led to the stage, including a 1964 appearance as Juliet at the Virginia Shakespeare Festival, before television brought her wider attention through Good Morning World and Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In. Her Laugh-In persona played on the era’s idea of the dizzy blonde, but Hawn’s control was evident from the start. Her first major film role, in Cactus Flower, earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She followed it with comedy, satire and drama, appearing in films including Butterflies Are Free, The Sugarland Express, Shampoo and Foul Play. The Please Rewind movies capture a particularly rich stretch of that career. In 1980, Hawn led and co-produced Private Benjamin, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, and also appeared in the Neil Simon comedy Seems Like Old Times. Protocol arrived in 1984, followed by Overboard in 1987, a comedy opposite Kurt Russell. Death Becomes Her, released in 1992, placed her alongside Meryl Streep and Bruce Willis in a darkly comic story of rivalry and mortality. Across these films, Hawn could be glamorous, exasperated, resilient or gloriously self-involved without losing the human pulse of a performance. Her work has never been limited to acting. Hawn’s career also includes stage performance, professional dancing, television specials, singing, producing and directing. After The Banger Sisters in 2002, she spent fifteen years away from live-action film before returning in Snatched in 2017. She later played Mrs. Claus in The Christmas Chronicles and took a leading role in its sequel. It is a varied career, but the through line remains clear: Hawn knows how to make comedy feel light without treating it as lightweight.
