Elise Neal

Elise Neal has built a screen career that moves easily between comedy, drama, horror and action, but her path began with dance. Born in Memphis on March 14, 1966, she attended Overton High School for the Creative and Performing Arts before studying at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia on a full-ride scholarship. A former member of the Tennessee Ballet Company, Neal later moved to New York, worked in musical theatre and toured internationally before commercials brought her to Los Angeles. Her early screen work included appearances as a dancer in hip-hop and R&B music videos, followed by her film debut in Spike Lee's Malcolm X in 1992. Television soon became a major part of her career. She played Janice Sinclair on Loving and fighter pilot J.J. Fredericks on seaQuest 2032, then found her breakout role as Yvonne Hughley on the sitcom The Hughleys. Her performance across the show's 1998–2002 run earned two NAACP Image Award nominations for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series. Neal's film roles show the breadth of her work. She played schoolteacher Scrappie in Rosewood, Hallie in Scream 2 and aspiring singer Jeanine in Restaurant, with further credits including Money Talks, Paid in Full and Mission to Mars. In Hustle & Flow, she played Yevette, a performance that brought her a third NAACP Image Award nomination, this time for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture. She continued balancing television and film with roles in All of Us, K-Ville and Love Ranch, as well as guest appearances on Law & Order, Hangin' with Mr. Cooper, Method & Red and The Soul Man. Neal portrayed Gladys Knight in Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B, played Kathryn Munson in Logan and appeared in the anthology series Into the Dark. Alongside acting across stage and screen, she has also worked as a screenwriter and film producer—a fitting extension of a career that has never stayed in just one lane.
