Elisabeth Shue

Elisabeth Shue has built a career on an unusually flexible screen presence: open and approachable when a film needs warmth, but equally convincing when the material turns darker or more complicated. Born on October 6, 1963, in Wilmington, Delaware, and raised in South Orange, New Jersey, she began acting in television commercials before making her feature-film debut as Ali Mills opposite Ralph Macchio in The Karate Kid. That role established Shue as an immediately relatable performer, a quality she carried into her first star vehicle, Adventures in Babysitting. Cocktail followed, along with the role of Jennifer Parker in Back to the Future Part II and Part III. Yet her career has never stayed within one comfortable lane. She moved among comedy, romance, horror and thriller roles, appearing in films including Soapdish, The Trigger Effect, Deconstructing Harry, The Saint, Palmetto and Hollow Man. Leaving Las Vegas marked a decisive change of register. Playing a prostitute opposite Nicolas Cage, Shue received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, as well as BAFTA, Golden Globe and SAG nominations. She won Best Actress honors from the Independent Spirit Awards, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the National Society of Film Critics. The performance confirmed that the accessibility associated with her earlier work could also carry considerable dramatic weight.
