Dustin Hoffman has built his screen career around transformation, discomfort and the sense that a character is thinking faster than he can explain himself. Born in Los Angeles on August 8, 1937, Hoffman initially hoped to become a classical pianist and entered Santa Monica College intending to study medicine. An acting class changed his direction, leading to training at the Pasadena Playhouse and the Actors Studio, years of theatre work and a long stretch of odd jobs while he searched for roles. His major film breakthrough came as Benjamin Braddock in The Graduate, a performance that earned him an Academy Award nomination and challenged the conventional idea of a Hollywood leading man. He followed it with the radically different Ratso Rizzo in Midnight Cowboy, establishing the character-first approach that would define his work. Hoffman later won his first Academy Award for Kramer vs. Kramer, playing a father forced to reconsider both parenthood and himself. The Please Rewind movies capture several sides of that range. In Tootsie, Hoffman plays Michael Dorsey, a struggling actor who disguises himself as a woman to secure a soap-opera role. The comedy depends on precision, but Hoffman keeps the character's vulnerability and ambition in view beneath the complications. Rain Man offered a very different challenge: as Raymond Babbitt, an autistic savant, he created a carefully physical performance opposite Tom Cruise and won his second Academy Award. Hoffman could also bring his intensity into broader entertainment. His title-role performance in Hook turns Captain Hook into a theatrical bundle of vanity, menace and comic frustration. He later appeared in the revenge drama and legal thriller Sleepers, while Being John Malkovich placed him within one of the stranger American films of the late 1990s. Across comedy, drama and large-scale studio filmmaking, Hoffman has repeatedly resisted settling into one screen identity. Whether playing an anxious young man, a desperate actor, a difficult father or an extravagant pirate, he approaches the part from the inside outβ€”and makes the character's contradictions the main attraction.
