David Aston
David Aston is a New Zealand actor with a foundation in drama training, classical theatre and television work. He received a Diploma in Drama through the University of Auckland and Theatre Corporate, beginning a career built on the discipline and range demanded by live performance. From 1979 to 1989, Aston’s early performances included work for Mercury Theatre Corporate at Centrepointe Theatre. During that period, he took on a substantial group of Shakespearean roles: King Lear, Macbeth, Petruchio and Oberon. It is a revealing set of parts, moving from the authority and collapse of Lear to Macbeth’s ambition, Petruchio’s combative comedy and Oberon’s place at the centre of Shakespearean fantasy. Those roles gave Aston the opportunity to work across tragedy, comedy and romance rather than settling into one dramatic register. Lear and Macbeth are imposing central figures, while Petruchio in The Taming of the Shrew relies heavily on verbal sparring and comic timing. Oberon in A Midsummer Night’s Dream brings another kind of command, rooted in the heightened world of the play. Together, the characters show the breadth of the classical material that shaped Aston’s early performance career. Aston is also associated with television acting, extending his work beyond the stage. Although his career began with prominent Shakespearean characters, the through line is straightforward: an actor trained in drama and grounded in sustained theatrical practice. His profile is closely connected to New Zealand performance, with a decade of early theatre work providing the clearest picture of the experience behind his screen career.
