Courtney Gains has built the kind of varied screen career that resists being reduced to a single role or genre. Born in Los Angeles on August 22, 1965, the American actor found success during the 1980s through appearances in a notably wide-ranging group of films, including Children of the Corn, Hardbodies, Lust in the Dust, Back to the Future, Can’t Buy Me Love, Secret Admirer, Colors, The ’Burbs and Memphis Belle. That run established Gains as a familiar presence across very different kinds of movies. Rather than following one obvious path, he continued moving between film, television and other creative work. His later credits include Sweet Home Alabama, Desolation Canyon and Dorm Daze, on which he also served as an executive producer. He also made a cameo appearance in Rob Zombie’s remake of Halloween. Television has been another steady part of Gains’s career. He has guest-starred in episodes of Seinfeld, Monk, In the Heat of the Night, ER, JAG, Nash Bridges, Diagnosis: Murder, Charmed, Alias and My Name Is Earl. His work has extended to video games as well, with appearances in Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger and L.A. Noire. Gains’s interests behind and beyond the camera are just as broad. He has worked as a screenwriter, film producer and acting coach, while music has formed a separate strand of his career. On December 6, 1996, he performed live with Phish at a concert in Las Vegas; the performance was later released as Vegas 96. He has also released a solo album. Taken together, those credits reveal a career shaped less by a single defining lane than by a willingness to keep working across movies, television, games, production and music.
