Christopher Lloyd

Christopher Lloyd has built a career around characters who seem to operate on their own peculiar frequency. Whether playing a distracted inventor, an unnerving villain or a lovable oddball, he brings intensity to comedy and a sly comic edge to darker material. Born in Stamford, Connecticut, on October 22, 1938, Lloyd was raised in Westport and helped found the theater company at Staples High School. He apprenticed at summer theaters before studying acting in New York, including classes with Sanford Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse. His early career was rooted firmly in the theater, with Broadway and Off-Broadway work ranging from Shakespeare and Chekhov to contemporary productions. Lloyd made his first film appearance as psychiatric patient Max Taber in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest in 1975. Television soon gave him one of his defining parts: the wandering, ex-hippie cabbie Reverend Jim Ignatowski on Taxi, a performance that earned him two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. His best-known film role arrived as Emmett “Doc” Brown in the Back to the Future trilogy. Lloyd’s wide-eyed urgency, sudden shouts and complete commitment made the eccentric inventor feel larger than life without losing his warmth. He later returned to the character in Back to the Future: The Game and other appearances. That role sits within an unusually varied screen career. Lloyd played Klingon Commander Kruge in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, Professor Plum in Clue, the menacing Judge Doom in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and Uncle Fester in The Addams Family and Addams Family Values. His work has also extended into voice acting, television, video games and later stage roles, including Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman. More recent appearances in The Mandalorian and the live-action Knuckles series continue a career shaped by versatility and a willingness to make even the strangest characters feel fully inhabited.
