Please Rewind Talent Wall
Christina Ricci
Christina Ricci has built a career around characters who are difficult to overlook: outsiders, sharp observers and women with a taste for trouble. Born in Santa Monica on February 12, 1980, she made her film debut in Mermaids before finding the role that established her early screen identity. As Wednesday Addams in The Addams Family and Addams Family Values, Ricci brought a wonderfully controlled severity to a character surrounded by extravagant oddballs. Her performance in the sequel was praised for showing a depth beyond her years. She soon moved into her first leading role with Casper, playing the human half of a supernatural friendship. Those three Please Rewind movies capture the unusual assurance of her early work: even as a young performer, she could hold the frame without pushing for attention. The transition from child stardom to adult roles took Ricci toward stranger, darker material. She appeared briefly in Terry Gilliam’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, then played Katrina Van Tassel in Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow, earning a Saturn Award for the performance. Both films suited her ability to seem entirely at home in heightened, off-centre worlds. Elsewhere, The Ice Storm demonstrated her range in more grounded drama, while her acid-tongued lead performance in The Opposite of Sex brought critical acclaim and a Golden Globe nomination. Ricci’s career has continued across film, television, theatre and voice work, with producing becoming another part of her creative life. Roles in Monster, Black Snake Moan and Penelope further showed her willingness to enter difficult or unconventional territory rather than settle into one familiar type. On television, she played Lizzie Borden in Lizzie Borden Took an Ax and The Lizzie Borden Chronicles, and later took on Misty Quigley in Yellowjackets, receiving a Primetime Emmy nomination. Her appearance as Marilyn Thornhill in Wednesday also created a neat connection to the role that first made her widely known. It is a fitting turn in a career that has repeatedly returned to the macabre while continuing to find new angles within it.
