Charlize Theron
Charlize Theron has built a career on refusing to remain in one lane. Born in Benoni, South Africa, in 1975, she first pursued modelling and trained as a ballet dancer before a knee injury closed off that path. Acting followed, with early roles showing an appetite for characters who could not be reduced to surface impressions. Her breakthrough came with The Devil's Advocate in 1997. Playing the increasingly haunted wife of Keanu Reeves's ambitious lawyer, Theron brought emotional weight to a film filled with supernatural menace and Al Pacino at full force. An appearance in Men of Honor followed in 2000, during a period in which she steadily moved between genres and directors. By The Italian Job in 2003, Theron could fit comfortably into the machinery of a studio heist movie without disappearing inside it. As safe and vault technician Stella Bridger, she joined an ensemble that included Mark Wahlberg, Edward Norton, Jason Statham, Seth Green and Donald Sutherland. That same year, she made a far more severe transformation to play serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Monster. The performance earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress, making her the first South African to win that award. Theron's later work has continued to test the limits of what audiences might expect from her. She played a mine worker confronting sexual harassment in North Country, the damaged ghostwriter at the centre of Young Adult and an overwhelmed mother in Tully. Her performance as Imperator Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road gave modern action cinema one of its defining protagonists, while Atomic Blonde placed her firmly at the centre of another physically demanding action film. Alongside acting across film, television and voice roles, Theron has also worked as a producer. Whether playing tightly controlled authority figures, wounded outsiders or action heroes, she brings a sharpness that makes even polished genre movies feel a little more dangerous.
