Brian O'Halloran

Brian O'Halloran has built an unusual acting career around one defining screen role and a lasting commitment to live theatre. Born in Manhattan on December 20, 1969, he had worked in theatre productions since high school before making his film debut as Dante Hicks, the main character in Kevin Smith's Clerks, in 1994. Dante became O'Halloran's recurring point of connection with Smith's films. He has returned many times, either as Dante or as another member of the Hicks family, giving his screen career a continuity that began with his very first role. Yet film is only one part of his work. Since Clerks, O'Halloran has primarily been a stage actor, appearing in productions with companies including The Boomerang Theatre Company, The New Jersey Repertory Company and The Tri-State Actors Theatre. O'Halloran has spoken about theatre as essential actor training, particularly because performing before a live audience leaves no opportunity to stop and restart. For him, that pressure sharpens both reflexes and memory. It also helps explain the shape of a career that has continued to move between stage and screen rather than following a conventional Hollywood path. In 2000, O'Halloran took the lead in Vulgar, playing a small-town clown traumatized after an attack during one of his performances. Writer-director Bryan Johnson wrote the lead specifically with O'Halloran in mind. Beyond acting and producing, O'Halloran began presenting the pop-culture podcast The O'HalloRant on YouTube in 2020. In 2025, he also competed on the American version of The Floor on FOX, reaching the semifinal episode and winning $110,000 after holding the most floor across episodes two through six. Across film, television and theatre, O'Halloran's career remains closely tied to performance itself: returning to familiar characters, taking on demanding lead roles and continuing the stage work that preceded his screen debut.
