Brian Henson

Brian Henson’s career is built on the point where performance, puppetry and filmmaking meet. Born in New York City on November 3, 1963, the son of Jane and Jim Henson, he appeared in filmed Sesame Street segments as a child and began learning the practical side of puppet work early. As a teenager, he built the first Muppet penguin puppet for a “Lullaby of Broadway” segment of The Muppet Show. That hands-on experience soon expanded into technically demanding screen work. At 17, Henson assisted on The Great Muppet Caper, helping to create and operate the rig that made it possible for the Muppets to appear to ride bicycles. He later performed marionette work in The Muppets Take Manhattan and contributed to effects-heavy productions including Santa Claus: The Movie and Little Shop of Horrors, where he controlled the mouth movement of the Audrey II puppet. His performance work also included Jack Pumpkinhead in Return to Oz and the voice of Hoggle in Labyrinth. Henson eventually moved into directing without leaving puppetry behind. He directed The Muppet Christmas Carol in 1992 and Muppet Treasure Island in 1996, two films that placed familiar Muppet personalities inside classic stories. In 2018, he directed and produced The Happytime Murders, taking puppet-driven filmmaking into an adult crime-comedy setting. His television work has been similarly varied. Henson served as an executive producer on Dinosaurs, Bear in the Big Blue House, Farscape, The Hoobs and Aliens in the Family. He was also the head judge on Jim Henson’s Creature Shop Challenge. As a performer, he created Sal Minella for Muppets Tonight, played Dr. Phil van Neuter, and later returned as Sal in Muppets Haunted Mansion. Across those roles—performer, director, producer, writer and marionette specialist—Henson’s career shows an unusual command of both what appears on screen and the intricate work required to make it move.
