Brian Geraghty

Brian Geraghty has built a screen career around grounded performances in crime stories, military dramas and period television. Born on May 13, 1975, he grew up in Toms River, New Jersey, and is of Irish descent. After graduating from Toms River High School East in 1993, he studied acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theatre. He began his professional career in New York City before later moving to Los Angeles. Geraghty’s work spans stage, film and television, with an early small role in The Sopranos followed by feature appearances in Jarhead, Bobby, The Guardian, We Are Marshall and The Hurt Locker. Taken together, those films established a career shaped less by one fixed screen persona than by an ability to fit naturally into serious dramatic worlds. Television has given Geraghty room to take on particularly complicated figures. In a 2010 episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit titled “Quickie,” he played a man intentionally infecting women with HIV. He later portrayed Agent Knox in the 2013 season of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, entering a crime drama defined by shifting identities and divided loyalties. In August 2014, Geraghty joined the second season of NBC’s Chicago P.D. as a series regular, adding a network procedural to a résumé already rich in crime-focused material. In 2018, he moved into period drama with TNT’s The Alienist, playing NYPD Police Commissioner Theodore Roosevelt. Across these roles, Geraghty has shown a steady preference for characters working within—or pushing against—institutions such as the military, law enforcement and government. His career is varied, but its strongest through line is a direct, controlled presence well suited to tense material.
