Brett Cullen

Brett Cullen has built the kind of career that rewards attentive viewers. Born in Houston on August 26, 1956, he studied at the University of Houston, graduating in 1979, and has credited theater professor Cecil Pickett as an important mentor. The university later presented Cullen with a Distinguished Alumni Award in 2012. Cullen’s screen work spans film and television, with a particular gift for bringing authority and lived-in credibility to supporting roles. His early television credits included The Chisholms and The Thorn Birds, followed by substantial parts as Dan Fixx in Falcon Crest and Sam Cain in the western series The Young Riders. He later took the lead as family patriarch Ned Logan in the post-Civil War drama Legacy. That steady television presence has carried across an unusually broad range of shows. On The West Wing, Cullen played Ray Sullivan, the Republican vice-presidential nominee and governor of West Virginia. Friday Night Lights cast him as Walt Riggins, while Lost, Damages, Make It or Break It and Person of Interest gave him recurring roles. In the latter, he appeared from 2011 to 2016 as Nathan Ingram, a character seen in flashbacks. His many guest appearances also include M*A*S*H, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Monk, NCIS, Criminal Minds and Desperate Housewives. His film roles reveal similar range. Cullen played a CAPCOM in Apollo 13, then portrayed astronaut David Scott in HBO’s From the Earth to the Moon. He appeared as quarterback Eddie Martel in The Replacements, Barton Blaze in Ghost Rider, a congressman in The Dark Knight Rises and Tom Eckert in the remake of Red Dawn. In 2019, he took on Thomas Wayne in Joker. Across these parts, Cullen has become a dependable screen presence in stories about families, institutions, ambition and power. Whether playing a politician, astronaut, father or authority figure, he often gives the role a grounded weight without pulling attention away from the larger ensemble.
