Brendan Sexton III

Brendan Sexton III has built a screen career around independent films, ensemble pieces and characters with a troubled edge. Born on February 21, 1980, in Staten Island, New York, he made his film debut as Brandon McCarthy, the bully at the uneasy heart of Todd Solondz’s Welcome to the Dollhouse. The performance earned him an Independent Spirit Award nomination and introduced an actor comfortable playing abrasive behavior without smoothing away the complications underneath it. Sexton soon moved into leading roles in Hurricane Streets and Desert Blue. His wider filmography crosses sharply different kinds of movies, from the cult favorites Empire Records and Pecker to Boys Don’t Cry and the large-scale war film Black Hawk Down. That range has allowed him to move between lead and supporting work while retaining a distinctly independent sensibility. His appearance in Black Hawk Down also became the subject of a 2002 radio interview. Sexton said the version released in theaters differed significantly from the original script, with scenes questioning the violent realities of war and the purpose of the U.S. mission in Somalia removed. His comments offered a rare public glimpse of his perspective on how a film can change between the page and the final cut. Elsewhere, Sexton starred in The Marconi Bros. alongside Dan Fogler and appeared in Jonathan Blitstein’s Let Them Chirp Awhile with Justin Rice. He also led Just Like the Son. Away from acting, he owns and operates Big Bit of Beauty, an independent record label based in New York City. Across these projects, Sexton’s career is less about following a single lane than moving between intimate independent stories, cult movies and larger productions. His debut remains an especially telling introduction: direct, uncomfortable and willing to sit with a character’s roughest qualities.
