Brandon Hammond

Brandon Hammond built a striking screen career while still young enough to play both childhood versions of major characters and fully formed dramatic roles of his own. Born Brandon La Ron Hammond in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on February 6, 1984, he began acting at six in Chevrolet commercials and public service announcements. His mother, Alfreda Williams, managed his early career. Hammond made his feature debut as the young Caine in Menace II Society (1993), immediately placing him inside a film with little room for softened edges. He followed it with appearances in Strange Days and Waiting to Exhale, as well as a substantial part in the horror anthology Tales from the Hood. Playing Walter, a boy frightened of his abusive stepfather, Hammond brought vulnerability to one of the film’s darkest stories. His 1996 roles showed how easily he could move between different kinds of Hollywood productions. Hammond played Sean Rayburn, the kidnapped son of Wesley Snipes’ character, in The Fan; Neville Williams in Tim Burton’s Mars Attacks!; and a young Michael Jordan in Space Jam. A year later, he took on the role most closely associated with his early career: Ahmad in Soul Food. Critics singled out his natural performance, and Hammond received the 1998 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Youth Actor. Television gave him room to develop recurring characters. He played Anthony during the final two seasons of Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman and Matty Stevenson, Gregory Hines’ son, on The Gregory Hines Show. His work on the latter earned Young Artist Award and YoungStar Award nominations, while guest appearances included Coach, Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper, Early Edition and The West Wing. After Blue Hill Avenue, Hammond played Lloyd Newman in the 2002 Showtime film Our America, earning another Young Artist Award nomination. His creative work later moved behind the camera: he submitted the student film Summer Blame while attending Saddleback College, and wrote Amaru, which won best screenwriting at the 2020 John Singleton Short Film Competition. It is a compact career, but one marked by an unusually broad range of screen worlds and a clear interest in storytelling beyond acting.
