Bradley Whitford

Bradley Whitford has built a career around characters who seem certain they understand the room—even when the ground is shifting beneath them. Born in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1959, he studied English and theater at Wesleyan University before training at the Juilliard School. His work has since ranged across film, television and the stage, with screenwriting and television producing also among his pursuits. Whitford’s early film roles reveal how comfortably he could move between genres. He appeared in Adventures in Babysitting, Presumed Innocent, Awakenings, Scent of a Woman, Philadelphia and Billy Madison, playing everything from boyfriends and lawyers to one of Adam Sandler’s most cheerfully unpleasant antagonists. On stage, his 1990 Broadway debut in Aaron Sorkin’s A Few Good Men began a recurring creative partnership with the writer. That partnership reached television with The West Wing, where Whitford played Josh Lyman from the series premiere in 1999. The role earned him a 2001 Emmy Award for supporting actor in a drama series, and he later wrote two episodes of the show. After its conclusion, he reunited with Sorkin as Danny Tripp in Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. Whitford’s later work has made particularly sharp use of the authority and confidence he can project. In Get Out, he played Dean Armitage, the outwardly genial father whose manner grows increasingly sinister. The Handmaid’s Tale cast him as Commander Joseph Lawrence, a performance that earned him a 2019 guest actor Emmy. That win made him the first performer to receive guest acting Emmys in both comedy and drama, following his earlier award for Transparent. His other roles include The Cabin in the Woods, Saving Mr. Banks, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Post and Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Across comedy, political drama, horror and science fiction, Whitford remains especially effective when charm, intelligence and unease occupy the same frame.
