Bríd Brennan
Belfast-born Bríd Brennan has built a career that moves comfortably between demanding theatre roles and screen performances marked by emotional weight and directness. Her early acting work took her to Dublin, where she appeared at the Gate, Abbey and Gaiety theatres and toured community centres with Moving Theatre. A defining role arrived with Brian Friel’s Dancing at Lughnasa. Brennan created Agnes Mundy in the original 1990 Dublin production, then continued in the West End and on Broadway, winning the 1992 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play. She later returned to Agnes for the 1998 film adaptation, appearing alongside Meryl Streep and winning an Irish Film & Television Award for Best Actress. Her theatre career has remained substantial and varied. Brennan played Janet in the National Theatre’s Rutherford and Son, Lady Macbeth on the Royal Shakespeare Company’s national tour of Macbeth, Sister Aloysius at Dublin’s Abbey Theatre and Kate Keller in All My Sons at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre. She also appeared in The Ferryman at the Royal Court before its West End transfer and originated the role of Mary in the National Theatre’s 2023 production of Dixon and Daughters. On television, Brennan was part of the BBC’s Billy trilogy and played Collette in Mike Leigh’s Four Days in July. For many viewers, however, her most striking television appearance remains Ghostwatch. Presented in the style of a live broadcast from a supposedly haunted house, the 1992 drama cast Brennan as Pamela Early, a mother confronting paranormal events alongside her two daughters. Its format caused considerable controversy and brought her to a huge television audience. Brennan later reprised her gift for grounded, high-stakes drama in Shadow Dancer, winning an IFTA for her performance as Ma. Her screen work also includes Cracker and the Irish-language crime thriller Doineann. Across stage, film and television, she has repeatedly found the tension inside characters facing pressure, fear and difficult choices.
