Bonnie Bartlett

Bonnie Bartlett built her career through performances that could expand with the material, turning recurring television characters into increasingly substantial presences. Born on June 20, 1929, in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, she was raised in Moline, Illinois. Her father had acted in stock productions before leaving the profession to settle with the family. Bartlett graduated from Moline High School in 1947 and earned her degree from Northwestern University in 1951. Her television career began with the soap Love of Life, where she played heroine Vanessa Dale Raven from 1955 to 1959 after replacing Peggy McCay. She moved into nighttime television during the 1960s and spent many years taking smaller guest roles on series including Gunsmoke, The Waltons, The Rockford Files and The Golden Girls. Two recurring parts demonstrated how effectively Bartlett could grow into a series. On Little House on the Prairie, she played Grace Snider Edwards from 1974 to 1977, with Grace becoming more prominent through her courtship and marriage to Isaiah Edwards. As Ellen Craig on St. Elsewhere, Bartlett handled an even heavier progression of stories involving marital conflict, bereavement, divorce and reconciliation. Her work earned back-to-back Emmy Awards. In 1986, she and her husband and fellow St. Elsewhere performer William Daniels became the second real-life married couple to win acting Emmys on the same night. Bartlett’s career gained fresh momentum in the 1980s. She appeared in the miniseries V and North and South: Book II, then played the mother of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito’s characters in the 1988 comedy Twins. After St. Elsewhere ended, she continued moving comfortably among contrasting television roles: a corrupt business matriarch in Wiseguy, Andrea Drey in seaQuest DSV, Lucille Taylor in Home Improvement and Ruth Katherine Greene in ER. She also reunited on screen with Daniels in Boy Meets World and took a feature-film role in Valediction. Across soap opera, drama, comedy and science fiction, Bartlett’s career has been defined by dependable range and a talent for giving recurring characters room to deepen.
