Bobcat Goldthwait

Bobcat Goldthwait has built the kind of career that resists a single label. Born Robert Francis Goldthwait in Syracuse, New York, on May 26, 1962, he decided early that making people laugh could become a life’s work. While still young, he performed for friends including future voice actor Tom Kenny. The pair later formed a comedy troupe called The Generic Comics, an early step toward Goldthwait’s stand-up career. By the 1980s, his mix of political satire, bizarre turns and unsettling black comedy had made him a recognizable solo performer. That recognition carried into acting, where his distinctive voice and excitable delivery became central to his screen presence. His first major role was Zed in the Police Academy franchise, followed by appearances in One Crazy Summer, Burglar, Scrooged and Hot to Trot. He also found a natural home in voice work, with credits across Capitol Critters, The Tick, Hercules, Lilo & Stitch: The Series and Buzz Lightyear of Star Command. Goldthwait’s career becomes even more interesting when viewed from behind the camera. In 1992, he wrote, directed and starred in Shakes the Clown, a dark comedy that satirized the dysfunctional stand-up circuit through rival communities of clowns and performers. Later films continued his attraction to uncomfortable subjects and abrasive comedy. Sleeping Dogs Lie explored honesty through an intentionally provocative premise, while World’s Greatest Dad, starring Robin Williams, tackled love, loss and the pursuit of notoriety. He also directed God Bless America and moved into horror with Willow Creek. His directing work extends to documentaries, including Call Me Lucky, about comedian and activist Barry Crimmins, and American Bigfoot. Across acting, stand-up, voice performance, writing and directing, Goldthwait has repeatedly chosen material with a strange angle and a willingness to make discomfort part of the joke.
