Bob Uecker
Bob Uecker took an unusual route to acting, arriving with the lived-in perspective of a professional catcher and the quick, self-deprecating humor of a veteran broadcaster. Born in Milwaukee on January 26, 1934, he grew up watching the minor-league Milwaukee Brewers at Borchert Field before building a baseball career of his own. After serving in the US Army, where he also played baseball, Uecker signed with his hometown Milwaukee Braves in 1956. He made his major-league debut in 1962 and spent six seasons in the majors with the Braves, St. Louis Cardinals and Philadelphia Phillies. He was part of the Cardinals’ 1964 World Series championship team, though he was never shy about turning his modest batting record into material. His career average was.200, while his defensive work behind the plate produced a.981 fielding percentage. That ability to find the joke in his own experience became central to Uecker’s next chapter. After retiring as a player, he moved into broadcasting, beginning with WSB-TV in Atlanta. In 1971, he started calling Milwaukee Brewers games on the radio, beginning a 54-season tenure with the club. His work eventually extended to national baseball broadcasts for ABC and NBC, including All-Star Games, League Championship Series and World Series coverage. Brewers home runs were regularly met with his familiar call: “Get up! Gone!” Acting became another part of a career that crossed sports and entertainment without losing its Milwaukee roots. Uecker’s appeal as a performer came from the same qualities heard in the booth: dry timing, an ease with the punchline and a willingness to make himself the target. Rather than separating his different careers, he made them feel like parts of the same public persona—a catcher who knew the game, a broadcaster who could explain it and an actor comfortable letting humor do the work.
