Bob Odenkirk

Bob Odenkirk has built one of the more interesting modern screen careers: a comedy writer and performer who became the dramatic center of a major television series, then trained for two years to play an action hero. The turns may look surprising from a distance, but they share a foundation in precision, timing and Odenkirk’s ability to find the nervous energy inside a character. Born in Berwyn, Illinois, on October 22, 1962, Odenkirk developed his sketch-writing and performance skills through college radio before moving into Chicago improv. He joined Saturday Night Live as a writer in 1987, working there through 1991, and later wrote for The Ben Stiller Show and Late Night with Conan O’Brien. His partnership with David Cross grew into Mr. Show with Bob and David, the HBO sketch series they created and starred in together. Its mix of cerebral comedy and committed absurdity established Odenkirk as a performer who could make elaborate foolishness feel strangely exact. His career changed course when he joined Breaking Bad in 2009 as Saul Goodman. Originally intended for three episodes, the corrupt lawyer became an ongoing character, with Odenkirk turning fast talk, showmanship and moral flexibility into something substantial enough to carry Better Call Saul. The spinoff followed Saul’s journey from court-appointed defense attorney to unscrupulous criminal lawyer, giving Odenkirk room to move between comedy, anxiety and drama while also serving as a producer. That wider dramatic range led to prominent film roles in Nebraska, The Post, The Disaster Artist, Little Women and Incredibles 2. In 2021, he took another sharp turn as Hutch Mansell in Nobody. Odenkirk underwent an intensive two-year training program for the action thriller, focusing on functional strength, mobility and combat conditioning. His work has continued across forms, including Lucky Hank, a guest appearance as Uncle Lee in The Bear, and his 2025 Broadway debut as Shelly Levene in Glengarry Glen Ross. Whether writing sketches, playing a cornered lawyer or stepping into an action sequence, Odenkirk’s career is marked by an unusual willingness to keep testing what kind of performer he can be.
